Family law changes help DV victims
Broadcast Fri 10 May 2024 at 6:30pm
Australia recently implemented reforms to its family law system aimed at better supporting women and children fleeing domestic violence. The key changes are:
Prioritising child safety: The Family Court will now focus on child safety and wellbeing as the main factors when deciding on parenting arrangements. This includes considering any history of family violence.
Removing the presumption of equal shared responsibility: The courts will no longer automatically assume that shared decision-making between parents is in the child's best interest.
Advocates believe these reforms are a positive step towards protecting victims of domestic violence.
Jo was interviewed in the segment. She expressed concerns about the new family law reforms, despite acknowledging some of the more positive aspects - Listen to the segment here: Family law changes help DV victims - ABC listen

Giving a voice to vulnerable Women
Tim Ladhams from Inside Small Business spoke with Jo about why and how 4 Voices aims to help vulnerable women and girls who are seeking social and digital connection and some of the challenges Jo’s faced in achieving that.
‘Everyone needs connection‘: How 4 Voices is helping vulnerable women
Emma Lennon from She Defined speaks with Jo about how 4 Voices is helping to address the unjust hardships facing Australian women through meaningful connection.
“Having spent much of her career in male-dominated industries and experiencing the discrimination, dismissal and abuse women face in these environments firsthand, Westh wanted to create a safe space for women and girls to support one another, build self-esteem, and foster meaningful connection.”
”Women who are told so frequently that they are worthless start to believe it themselves. Women who experience beatings, humiliation, torment, ridicule, and some who escape violence to live in their cars, on the streets, and sometimes with their kids.
“I will work as long as I can to ensure that no other girl or woman gets to the age of 60 before she learns to trust her instincts, to back herself, to find her voice.”
Australia’s Homelessness Crisis
Women over 55 are the fastest-growing cohort of homeless in Australia.

Logan Ladies’ Luxury
Women doing it tough share their stories
On September 8 around 50 women turned up for 4 Voices’ Logan Ladies’ Luxury pampering event in Slacks Creek to celebrate Women’s Health Week. We had eyebrow threading, facials, makeup, manicures, hand massages, hairdressing and free clothing in addition to barista coffee and food - all for free. Thanks for Logan YFS for partnering with us for this special event.
The pampering events 4 Voices holds give women and girls a much-needed break from the tedium of everyday and serve as a reminder that they have people who care about them. They also help remind women and girls to make their physical and mental health a priority. And who doesn’t love a bit of pampering?
