Who we're looking for

We’re always seeking compassionate people who bring empathy, a non-judgemental ear and the ability to make meaningful connections with others.

Essential

You can volunteer with 4 Voices if you are:

  • over 18

  • any gender identity

  • open-minded and empathetic – be mindful that you will be interacting with at-risk women and girls

  • able to complete a Working with Children Check (or equivalent) in your state or territory

  • committed to completing all required training and volunteering on a regular schedule (at least 3 hours a week for 6 months).

Optional

It’s a bonus if you also:

  • have relevant qualifications or experience

  • speak more than one language, as we support diverse communities

If you do, let us know in your application as we value your skills and knowledge. But for most roles you don’t need any experience or qualifications, and we provide training to prepare you for your role.

We value volunteers with lived experience. However, for your wellbeing we recommend that you mention this in your application so we can have a chat with you to ensure that volunteering with 4 Voices is a good fit for you in the light of your lived experience.

How to volunteer

Step 1: Understand what we do

We provide ongoing support to women and girls who are experiencing isolation, crisis or disconnection through:

  • face-to-face services in South East Queensland and Greater Sydney

  • phone support services nationally

Our approach is simple but impactful. We initiate conversations, often starting with something as comforting as a cuppa. Through consistent care and connection, we help women build trust, navigate challenges and access the resources they need to create positive change in their lives.

As a volunteer, you'll be a vital part of this service, offering a listening ear, practical help and a pathway to change for those who need it.

Step 2: Find your role

If you're not sure which role to apply for, contact us at volunteer@4voices.org.au to discuss which opportunities would be the best fit for you.

Face-to-face support services

  • Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Gold Coast, Sydney (inner), Western Sydney (see shift times and locations)

  • 3 to 4 hours per week minimum

  • Training required: 2 hours (online, self-paced)

Be part of a compassionate team providing face-to-face support to women in your community at our van or backpack shifts. You’ll listen without judgement, build connections and offer practical help to change lives.

This role requires interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, facing a variety of challenges. Your kindness and empathy will make a lasting impact.

You will be required to help with setting up and packing down the van, which requires lifting equipment such as tables and chairs, and erecting canopies. So, please consider your physical abilities before applying for this role.

Phone support services

  • Anywhere in Australia

  • 3 to 6 hours per week minimum

  • Training required: 3 hours total. Introductory training (2 hours, online, self-paced) and role-specific training (1 hour, online)

Support women from the comfort of your own home. Through phone calls, you’ll offer companionship, empathy and practical help to women who are feeling lonely, anxious or afraid. Your role is to listen, understand and offer genuine compassion.

We need volunteers for 2 types of phone support:

  • Social isolation support: Weekly calls for women feeling isolated. You’ll need excellent listening and communication skills, plus the ability to offer empathy without judgment.

  • High-risk support: Crisis support for women in need. You'll need a background or qualifications in psychology, social work or counselling.

Organisational support

  • Anywhere in Australia

  • 3 to 6 hours per week usually, depending on role or project

  • Training required: 2 hours (online, self-paced)

Help us keep things running smoothly! From admin and IT to project management, fundraising and events, your skills can directly contribute to delivering essential services.

This role is flexible and can accommodate a variety of expertise, from marketing, and people and culture, to learning and development, and work health and safety. Your involvement ensures that we can continue to support women who need it most.

What happens next

After you apply, we'll review your application. We may contact you to help us assess your suitability for the role you’ve applied for, and if needed we can work with you to suggest another role that would be a better fit for your skills and experience.

Before you can start as a volunteer, there are some key next steps you’ll need to complete. We’ll email you details, but here’s what to expect.

Training

You’ll be required to complete training to prepare you for your role.

We value our volunteers, and the need to prepare them to provide support to members of our community who are in crisis. The training is designed to equip you with the necessary skills to perform your role, such as how to have non-judgemental conversations and provide practical support.

  • All volunteers: 2-hour introductory training. This training is online and interactive, and you can do it in your own time and pause it at any time.

  • Phone support volunteers: additional 1-hour role-specific training to prepare you to work unsupervised, delivered online through Microsoft Teams.

  • Team leaders: additional 1-hour leadership training, delivered online through Microsoft Teams.

Working with Children Check

If you live in:

  • Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia or Northern Territory, you’ll need a current Working with Children Check. In Queensland this is known as a blue card.

  • Tasmania or the Australian Capital Territory, you’ll need a current Working with Vulnerable People Check.

If you don’t already have a current check, you’ll be required to apply for one through your state or territory government. It’s free for volunteers in most states and territories.

This is required for all volunteers, even if you are eligible for an exemption in your professional capacity (for example as a teacher, psychologist or healthcare practitioner).

This process helps to ensure safety for everyone involved and includes a comprehensive criminal record check.

Your volunteering journey with 4 Voices

During your time volunteering with us we’ll support you to grow and develop, personally and professionally.

Personal support

The work we do is rewarding, but it can be challenging. We have our very own in-house Volunteer Support Practitioner who you can talk to confidentially about any issues and experiences that are bothering you.

You can talk to them about anything at all, including:

  • emotional overwhelm, stress and burnout

  • a traumatic or upsetting shift

  • feeling inadequate or unprepared

  • working with limited resources or feeling underappreciated

  • discrimination or bullying.

Development opportunities

We have a culture of ongoing learning and professional development. We like to help you develop your skills and provide you with opportunities that may also lead to personal growth, work experience or even employment with 4 Voices.

All volunteers have access to:

  • our library of self-guided training modules, and recommendations from your team leader on appropriate training to build your skills as you progress on your volunteering journey

  • Mental Health First Aid training with our accredited in-house trainer

  • opportunities to contribute to projects such as fundraising campaigns, events and celebrations

  • potential pathways to move into leadership roles or other specialised positions.
